February 2020 Volunteer Spotlight

Family Promise of Beaufort County Shines the Spotlight on Cynthia Miller

As a volunteer driven organization, we are shining the spotlight each month on one of our dedicated volunteers who are the heart of Family Promise. They work tirelessly and greatly deserve our thanks and recognition!

In February, we shine the Volunteer Spotlight on Cynthia Miller, an office volunteer at the Day Center in Bluffton.  Cynthia felt an immediate connection, when she became an office volunteer early last June.  “My volunteer work here gives me the opportunity to see human kindness displayed in the financial and/or in-kind gifts that are donated to Family Promise to keep them up and running and helping the homeless population,” she said.”

Cynthia had a 33- year career as a legal secretary and worked for various law firms in Washington D.C.  When her husband Daniel, retired from the federal government they moved to Bluffton so they could be closer to his hometown of St. Helena Island.  Previous to moving to the Low Country she lived in Bowie, MD, which is right outside of Washington D.C. She and her husband have been married for 32 years and have one daughter who is currently living in New York.

“I enjoy seeing the results from the work that Family Promise provides those families needing assistance. That is seeing the families stick with the program and transition into a permanent home,” Cynthia said. Her large Christian family upbringing taught her to have compassion for the less fortunate and those who fall upon hard times. She stated that, “

The work that Family Promise does to help those needing assistance is a constant reminder that “but for the grace of God, there go I.” And, “if I can help somebody as I pass along, then my living shall not be in vain.” At her former church in Washington, D.C., Cynthia was a member of the Brown Bag Ministry which provided bag lunches to the homeless population in the city parks and shelters.

In her spare time she likes to spend time with family and friends. Now that she is no longer working full-time she hopes to get in more travel. Cynthia, also volunteers at the First Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Bluffton Food Pantry.

We are thankful for dedicated volunteers like Cynthia who generously share their time with Family Promise. We greatly appreciate her help in meeting the needs of homeless children and their families.
