BEAUFORT, S.C. (WSAV) – A Lowcountry organization that helps give homeless families a fresh start can use some help of its own.

In Beaufort County, 365 children go to school every day but don’t have a home to return to.

That’s where Family Promise steps in. In the past 8 years, the organization has helped 400 individuals – 130 families – work to escape homelessness.

They provide a shelter, which gives people a chance to build their resumes and skills. Families can stay at Family Promise for 90 days, provided with a place to stay, food to eat and classes to take.

“Sometimes we don’t see the potential in ourselves it takes another person to see the potential in you and you have some people who will dive that potential and drive that potential,” said Tatiana Merritt, a former Family Promise resident. “Keep pushing, keep pushing. Because if they see it in you they want to see it come out of you.”

Merritt just left the shelter and now lives with her partner and child in a place of her own in Savannah.

To help continue the work they do, a fundraiser for Family Promise is happening on Monday.

Weichert Realtors is holding a golf and tennis fundraiser and luncheon at Wexford Plantation at 2:00 p.m. There will be food, drinks and a silent auction.

Each $35 ticket will help benefit the shelter.
