November Volunteer Spotlight

Family Promise of Beaufort County Shines the Spotlight on Roger and Beverly Schoenhardt

As a volunteer driven organization, we are shining the spotlight each month on one of our dedicated volunteers who are the heart of Family Promise. They work tirelessly and greatly deserve our thanks and recognition!

In November, we shine the Volunteer Spotlight on Roger and Beverly Schoenhardt, Co-Support Coordinators at St. Andrew by the Sea United Methodist Church in Bluffton, who have been involved with Family Promise of Beaufort County (FPBC) for four years.  Their church has been part of FP for the past four years. They have been a part of their congregation for twelve years by serving as Stephen Ministries, mission committee and through leadership roles.

St. Andrew by the Sea has always been dedicated to providing for the FP guests. “Being able to serve families in crisis, each person is a child of god,” Schoenhardt’s said. “Received with dignity and humility is very important in life.”  As a host church they provide meals and overnight stays for the families. The couple has great communication with their church, family, clergy and support staff allowing 16 volunteers to sign up easily for events.

Schoenhardt’s are former college faculty and enjoyed teaching to others.  When life changing events at Mayo Clinic happened to Beverly it gave them the opportunity to focus on serving their community and the world.  They participate in other volunteer organizations such as Back Pack Buddies and UMCOR. Serving the world and community is very important to both of them and they have shown this by building a school in Belize, developing a Dignity Center for the Homeless in Minneapolis and serving Sunday dinners for 300 people.

Beverly and Roger were downsizing in retirement and moved to the Low Country 14 years ago from Minnesota. “We wanted to move closer to family who live in North Carolina and Virginia and of course the weather played a big part in the move.”  The Schoenhardt’s stated. They have a blended family with 6 children, 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. In their free time the couple enjoys travelling, visiting the sights of South Carolina, walking the nature trails, reading and viewing sporting events.

“Beverly and I continue as a team to serve with great gratitude.” Roger said. “From Psalm 16:6-11 the boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places, I have a delightful inheritance… you show me the path of life.  In your presence, there is fullness of joy; in your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”

The Schoenhardt’s exemplify the more than 700 volunteers who make it possible for Family Promise to assist homeless children and their families.  We greatly thank you for all that you do!
