April Volunteer Spotlight 2019

Family Promise of Beaufort County Shines the Spotlight on Debra Mailloux

As a volunteer driven organization, we are shining the spotlight each month on one of our dedicated volunteers who are the heart of Family Promise. They work tirelessly and greatly deserve our thanks and recognition!

In April, we shine the Volunteer Spotlight on Debra Mailloux, an office volunteer at the Day Center in Bluffton.  Debra has long known of Family Promise and is committed to the organization’s mission to assist homeless children and their families.

Debra says she felt an immediate connection when she became an office volunteer early last December.  “I was excited to find a volunteer opportunity where I can use my past work experience and feel privileged to be part of such a great team,” she said.

Debra comes weekly to the Family Promise Day Center to help with a variety of projects.  Usually working half days, some weeks she commits more time to assist with bigger tasks. Her willingness to pitch in has been a great asset as a key player in preparing for the yearly fundraising event held on April 4.  Debra worked side by side with staff members and volunteers and dedicated lots of time to gathering silent auction items.

Debra draws on her past administrative experience with a philanthropic foundation, where she worked for 16 years before retiring one year ago.  Having recently moved to the Low Country, she lived in South Florida for more than 30 years. One of her sisters lives in Sun City and Debra had visited her often. Once she retired, it was a natural for Debra to make the move to Bluffton where she too lives in Sun City.

“Having lived here less than a year, I still feel new to the area and am taking time to explore all there is to do here.  I enjoy the friendliness of the people, the climate, and the geographic location with our easy access to many diverse cities,” Debra said.

A member of a large family, Debra has three sisters, one brother, and many nieces and nephews. She greatly enjoys spending time with family members who often come to visit from Connecticut and Florida. Debra also likes to swim, participate in a variety of activities at Sun City, read and travel.

We are thankful for dedicated volunteers like Debra who generously share their time with Family Promise. We greatly appreciate her help in meeting the needs of homeless children and their families.
